Tom Zirbel (Bissell) set the fastest time for the first stage of the Tour of Elk Grove, the eponymous Elk Grove Village Bank & Trust Pro Men Stage 1 Time Trial. He stopped the clock at 08:36.37 for the 4.5 mile (7.2 km) course, 3 seconds faster than Chris Horner (Astana). François Parisien (Team RACE Pro) was third at 8 seconds back.
Quick calculations... Zirbelicious made $516 for each second (give or take a few hundreds of a second) on his bike. Cool.
With conflicting races, the field is down to 55 riders from 97 riders this year, and only had 12 teams listed in the results which should make for interesting racing in the road race. Kelly Benefit/Medifast placed 3 riders in the top ten including Tour of Pennsylvania winner David Veilleux and local Reid Mumford. Teams with 6 riders are Bissell, Jelly Belly, Rock Racing, Successful Living, Inferno, Toyota-United, Team RACE and Kelly Benefit/Medifast. Astana's Horner, Team Type 1's Matt Wilson and Garmin-Chipotle's stagiaire Dan Holloway are the lone representative for their team.
On Saturday afternoon is the 105-mile (170 km) Citi Men Pro road stage which includes a 7.6 mile (12.2 km) loop repeated 10 times (map). The stage includes some serious primes on the line including sprint lines and time bonuses.
